这是从类似于怪谈的一个故事开始的，Dallings在晚上回家的途中迷路了，在伦敦的大雾中，他隐约看到一扇窗户上有绞刑架的阴影，上面吊着一个类似于人的物体……几天后的晚上，苏格兰场的Talbot探长接到一通神秘的电话，声称一个叫El Moulk的人将会在Ruination Street被处以绞刑。当他由于伦敦没有这样的街道而以为这是个玩笑时，另一个消息传来，来访的Bencolin正带人在伦敦城追逐一辆疯狂行驶的轿车，车上除了早已死亡的司机之外空无一人。那辆车正好属于El Moulk，而El Moulk之前也收到了来自一个叫Jack Ketch的人的恐吓信，更在那天从此失踪，消失在了那个叫Ruination Street的地方……
